Koukounaries, Troulos, Maratha

In much the same mould as Agia Paraskevi is Troulos (bus stops 19-20), another beach which, though large and sandy, can seem to lack character.  Again, watersports are offered and the surrounding area is (relatively) built up.  Tavernas include Taverna Troulos and Blue Beach.

At bus stop 22 is Maratha beach.  Much smaller and quieter than nearby Koukounaries, the pine trees here offer some natural shade.

At the end of the bus route you finally reach the iconic Koukounaries (Blue Flag, accessed at the east end at bus stop 23 and the west by 26).  With over a kilometre of soft white sand and backed by pine trees, it is strikingly beautiful, and even if you prefer less developed beaches, it is a must see.  There are a variety of tavernas, bars and watersports huts, and the Skiathos Dive Centre has a hut at the far western end of the beach.  Speedboat taxis travel to various locations, but are expensive.

Much of Koukounaries is thick with sun beds but there are also stretches where it is possible to set out your stall independently.  The pine trees at the back of the beach provide some natural shade.

A path from the east side of Koukounaries leads up to the three beaches on the southeastern corner of the island – Ampelakia, Banana and Little Banana.  Just around the corner from Koukounaries, the small Ampelakia beach appeals to those who want a lower key option.  The Mystique beach bar provides ample opportunities for posers, and its music can be heard elsewhere on the beach.
