Attractions in Skiathos Town

Don’t forget the attractions in Skiathos Town itself.  The Attikon open air cinema (8 Euros) is on Papadiamantis, showing films in English with Greek subtitles.  (Mamma Mia seems to be ever-present on the schedules.)  The Papadiamantis Museum is located in a square just off the street bearing his name.  Although Papadiamantis, a major Greek writer of the nineteenth century, lived in Athens for the majority of his life, he was born and died on Skiathos, and the small house where he spent his last days has been preserved as a museum (his works are sold in the shop below, see ‘shopping’ above).

The Bourtzi is an interesting and integral feature of Skiathos Town, intersecting the old and new ports.  In times gone by this tiny island, now joined by a bridge to the town, was the location of a Turkish fortress.  The old primary school on the Bourtzi is now a cultural centre, and there is also an outdoor theatre which hosts occasional concerts.  It is not immediately obvious to the first time visitor that on the far side of the Bourtzi is a nice cafe looking out to sea – so make sure you don’t leave without stopping here for a coffee or cocktail and taking in the views.
